This annual holiday concert always draws a very large crowd of Northwest Indiana residents. For this year’s concert, we have commissioned a new work from Pennsylvania-based American composer Joseph Gregorio. Gregorio, director of choirs at Swarthmore College, writes lyrical, harmonically rich, and rhythmically organic acoustic music in elegantly balanced forms. His work is grounded in the traditional principles of western European art music but is infused with numerous American influences. The balance of the program will include other 21st Christmas works and familiar carols in new arrangements, two of which feature Steven Ingle, bassoonist.
The concert will close, as usual, with our traditional, candlelit “Silent Night.”
Joseph Gregorio writes lyrical, harmonically rich, and rhythmically organic acoustic music in elegantly balanced forms. His work is grounded in the traditional principles of western European art music but is infused with numerous American influences. Gregorio composes for voices and for instruments; his output includes song, choral, solo, chamber, and orchestral music.
On the podium, Gregorio is an exacting conductor who insists on technical excellence and emotionally, artistically engaging performance from the musicians with whom he collaborates. He presently primarily conducts collegiate singers, though he has worked with semi-professional, community, and high-school ensembles as well.
